Moondrop SSR

Updated: Nov 1, 2020

Today we'll be taking a look at the Moondrop SSR. The Moondrop SSR was recently released from Moondrop who are famous for their IEM's like the Starfield and the KXXS.

*This review was made possible by ShenZhenAudio. They kindly sent us the Moondrop SSR for review purposes. I would like to thank them for trusting us and giving us this chance to review the SSR. It is also our first time collaborating with them so cheers to that as well! This however, will not affect the review in any way and I will continue to give my most honest opinion throughout the whole review.

As I mentioned earlier, Moondrop was famous for their previous models like the Starfield, KXXS and Blessing 2 and many other impressive IEM's. We will now look and their cheapest option from them which is the Moondrop SSR which retails at $39.99 USD at ShenZhenAudio.

The SSR comes in a relatively small box with an anime drawing on it. At the back of the Box, there are all the boring specifications so I will not go over that in detail.

When you get the SSR, of course you get the SSR and Stock Cable. You will get 3 pairs of silicon tips and a leather pouch.

Ear tips:

Despite the SSR being relatively small in size(resembles the shape of a heart), I wasn't exactly able to get a really good fit. I tried all the ear tips but could not get a good seal probably due to the shape of my ear so the angle of the SSR just wasn't right for me. In the end, I decided to stick with my own foam tips which got me a really good seal in the end.

The Leather pouch. Let's be honest here. It's Just ridiculously small. There's no way I can fit my Moondrop SSR with the stock cable in it with ease. The only time I will use it, is probably when I give it away, or I keep it in storage. Other wise, I don't really see a need for it.

Stock Cable quality is decent. In fact I actually like it. It has a very simple look and feel. Sometimes simplicity is the best.

Sound Quality:

My first impressions. The bass is definitely not to my liking. The bass seemed kind of light, and it wasn't really punchy or anything. If your a basshead, please look elsewhere this instant. It is tight and fast paced though. The mids and vocals on these were very impressive though. The SSR works well will sources like smartphones but if you would like better sound quality, I recommend you use an amplifier or a digital audio player to maximize the potential of the SSR.

Bass: Like I said, it's really light, Nothing much to be said here and not really impressed by it also. It's fast paced and I would say it's just decent. Sub bass can still be heard and a tiny bit of rumble. It still has some detail and texture which is good for music which emphasize on vocals.

Mids:

Vocals are Fantastic. Has very good clarity. Female vocals especially shine on the SSR. Sounds very detailed and clean as well. Notes are also thin and clear with great separation from note to note. The mids also provide a very delicate texture.

Treble:

The treble has very good detail retrieval. All the micro details can be heard extremely clearly. It gives a very energetic sound as well. Notes could use a bit more fullness I guess but the timbre is just right.

Conclusion:

If you like music that emphasize on vocals with good detail and slight texture to the bass, a bright IEM would be a good option and this is the right IEM for you. Go and get it now and be immersed in the music.
