Moondrop SSP : Super Spaceship Pulse

Welcome back everyone. Today, we have another IEM that we will be taking a look at which is the Moondrop SSP. If you are reading this, I am sure you would have some knowledge of the brand Moondrop which is famous for their models like the Starfield and the KXXS. Today, We will be talking about the SSP.

This Moondrop SSP was sent to us by Cloris@SHENZHENAUDIO. Many thanks for sending us this unit for review purposes. This fact will not affect my review and it will remain unbiased and I will continue to give my honest opinion.

The Moondrop SSP is similar to the SSR in a number of ways.

  1. Identical shell.

  2. Box dimensions and accessories is the same as well.

  3. Stock Cable is also the same.

Differences:

  1. Different box design

  2. Different tuning

  3. The shell is midnight blue matte finished instead of a glossy finish like the SSP.

Packaging of the SSP

I won't bother taking a picture of the SSP ear tips since its the same as the SSR so you most probably can guess what it looks like. The fit is also exactly the same as the SSP so I won't say much about it. The foam cut out is the same as well.

Now, shall we start talking about the sound?

As Moondrop promised, the SSP does have a more punchy bass making the SSP fun sounding and suitable for pop music and it does well with other genres as well.

Bass:

The bass is the highlight of the SSP. After receiving feedback about the SSR's somewhat lacking bass, Moondrop has come back with the SSP giving a more resolving bass packing a good punch and nice sub bass. It has a good rumble and it is very well textured compared to the SSP. Best of all, the SSP is going for the same price as the SSR. If you prefer a better all rounder and a nice tight and punchy bass, you should go for the SSP. It is very warm sounding and makes slow music give you a warm fuzzy feeling...at least for me that was how it was.

Mids:

As the saying goes,'sometimes you have to let things go so there is room for better things to come'. The mids I wouldn't say has de-proved, but it just isn't as prominent as it was in the SSR. I think this is because of the bass in the SSP so you can't do much about it. There is really not much to say here. Same goes for the highs. The detail is still there, but it doesn't seem as shouty as the SSR which is a good thing. It just doesn't shine as much as it did in the SSR. This doesn't mean that the SSP is a bad IEM. It's still a fantastic IEM in my opinion and I am glad Moondrop took the feedback and rectified the issues with the SSP to give the ideal sound signature that audiophiles are looking for.

My biggest with the SSP however is the sound leak. It is such a turn off. Because the SSP is just held together by a faceplate and a screw, the gap between it leaks a lot of sound. For me, I listen to music at high volumes. When I go onto the train, the person next to me gives me a weird stare and I wasn't sure why. I only realised when I was sitting next to my friend and he asked me why I was listening to such an old song that he recognised. That was when I realised the sound leak was a big issue.

In conclusion, the Moondrop SSP is a fantastic IEM that has improved greatly compare to the SSP and I give Moondrop a big thumbs up for that. I understand that I mentioned the mids and highs don't shine as much, but it does not mean that it is bad. I feel that Moondrop maintained it but this time, the bass just stole the stage. Well done once again Moondrop, you have done us proud.
